Barrettes and hair bows, a rite of passage for young black girls. When Tyra graduated to “more sophisticated” styles, like cornrows and stopped wearing “childish” barrettes she was introduced to hair politics. The change in appearance shifted heridentity. She became self-aware, self-conscious, and felt exposed. Oddly strangers started referring to Tyra as “young man” and asking her mom if she was her son.
