In April 2023, Watercare announced plans for the construction of a new wastewater treatment plant on 56 hectares of land at 372 Glenbrook Beach Road, Glenbrook, Auckland. We firmly believe it is essential to re-start this process, without the time constraints forced upon our community, and for Watercare and Auckland Council to engage in meaningful negotiations with us.
Watercare recently applied to re-zone ALL 56 hectares from market gardening to a sewage plant.
Our objective is to reinstate Watercare’s original best practicable outcome - to secure a short-term discharge at the existing Waiuku Wastewater Treatment Plant site near the Steel Mill, while simultaneously establishing a commitment that Watercare will construct a pipeline that connects to the Tasman Sea or establishes a disposal to land scheme.
We also advocate for the development of a comprehensive master plan that includes the local and wider areas affected by this scheme.
Watercare are currently facing time constraints that require them to expedite the construction of a new treatment plant before their discharge consent at Clarks Beach runs out in June 2026. By allowing for short term discharge at the Waiuku WWTP site with a clear memorandum of the subsequent pipeline construction to the Tasman Sea or to land, we present Watercare with a compelling and viable alternative solution that is environmentally sound and economically feasible.
This option also paves the way for the combining of the discharge from the Mangere and southern wastewater treatment plants. This would ultimately result in no more wastewater pollution of nitrates and phosphates or untreated bypass events into the Manukau Harbour and would significantly enhance the overall health of New Zealand’s second largest natural Harbour that has been mis-treated for too long.
