SSFA Veteran's Fishing Day - Volunteers
  • SSFA Veterans Fishing Day Volunteer Opportunity

    The SSFA Veteran Fishing Day is August 1, 2026. This is our largest event of the year and demands the largest number of volunteers. Please see the description below for volunteer opportunities. We will have a captain's and volunteers meeting on Friday, July 31 at 6:00 p.m. at the Elks Lodge in Marquette where we will go over in detail the event and prepare you for your volunteer position.
  • Lakeview Arena Setup
    Assist with setting up tables, chairs, and general event preparation for the following day.

    Location: Lakeview Arena
    Time: Friday, July 31 | 4:00 – 6:00 p.m.

    Harbor / Launch Coordinator
    Veterans will begin arriving as early as 7:00 a.m. to meet their assigned boat captains. Coordinators will be stationed at each launch site to assist veterans in locating their captains. You will be provided with a list of veterans assigned to your location, as well as a master list of all participants, captains, and launch sites to help resolve any confusion.

    Harbor / Launch Assistant
    Assist the Harbor Coordinator in guiding veterans to their assigned captains. This role also includes helping veterans safely navigate ramps, docks, and boarding boats as needed.

    Fish Collection & Offloading
    Following the fishing portion of the day, a boat parade will take place at 1:00 p.m. in the Lower Harbor. Volunteers will assist with docking boats, collecting fish using provided bins, and safely transferring the catch to be transported to Thill’s Fish House for processing.

    Parade Volunteers
    Assist with organizing and guiding the public during the boat parade at Lower Harbor.

    Fish Cleaning & Processing
    Once collected, fish will be transported to Thill’s Fish House for cleaning and processing. Volunteers will assist with preparing and packaging the fish into individual portions for distribution to participating veterans.

    Lunch & Hospitality
    Welcome veterans as they return from fishing and assist with serving lunch and refreshments at Lakeview Arena. Volunteers will also help with setup, cleanup, and general hospitality throughout the event.

    Event Breakdown
    Assist with final cleanup, including taking down tables and chairs and restoring the venue after the event concludes.
