Who can be a Confirmation sponsor?
- A sponsor must be at least 16 years old.
- He or she must be a practicing Catholic who has received each of the sacraments of initiation (Baptism, Eucharist, and Confirmation).
- A sponsor must regularly attend Mass on Sundays and Holy Days, participate in the sacramental life, and be a faithful Catholic in word and deed.
- If the sponsor is married, the marriage must be considered sacramental by the Catholic Church.
- A sponsor cannot be a parent of the catechumen or candidate.
What is a Sponsor?
A sponsor represents the faith community to a catechumen or candidate.
Sponsors accompany them in their journeys of faith. A sponsor is:
- A role model of faithful Christian living and the sacramental life
- A companion, offering a welcoming presence, a listening ear, and heartfelt encouragement
- A prayer partner, committing to life-long prayerful support and guidance
- A witness to a catechumen or candidate’s progress in faith and readiness for the sacraments, presenting him/her to the minister for initiation
- A participant in various rites with his/her candidate.
