    Washoe County Books and Buddies Mentor Interest Form 2026-2027

    You can help a child become a confident reader—just one hour a week! As a Books & Buddies volunteer mentor, you'll meet with the same two elementary students each week to read together and build their reading skills, confidence, and love of books. By showing up consistently, you'll help your students improve their reading skills and grow their literacy confidence.

  • Mentor Requirements 

    • Be at least 16 years of age 
    • A completed online application   
    • Attend a mentor orientation session (1.5 hours)  
    • Pass a criminal background check 
    • Apply through WCSD for approval to serve as a volunteer within the school 
    • Volunteer for 1 hour per week on a designated day/time   
    • Transportation to and from the assigned school location

  • Below is a list of Mentor Center locations. Please review and chose your preferred school. Specific site hours are still being determined by the school. We ask each mentor to commit to one hour a week to mentor 2 students. Mentor hours are between regular school hours from 9am-2:30pm Monday-Thursday. Mentor sessions will begin in September at both sites.

  • Mentors will be required to complete an hour long mentor training. Training dates and times will be set based on interested mentors availability and will be held in August. Mentors will be required to complete the Washoe County School District Volunteer Application and be approved prior to mentoring. Once this form is completed, our staff will reach out to you with more information. Thank you for your interest in helping children in our community!
