WORKSHOPS & ACTIVITIES
YLA designs most learning through student-centered interactive workshops and class activities. Students are engaged to think critically, share stories, broaden understanding, and develop leadership skills. Students gain a sense of personal empowerment, community awareness, leadership capacity, academic motivation, and career readiness.
YLA alumni provide inspiration as role-models to students and peer mentors. YLA alumni are extensively integrated into the program at every level, with as many as 50 alumni involved as trainers, special speakers, workshop leaders, panel participants, and peer mentors. Alumni share their experiences in completing college and their careers in public, private, nonprofit, and educational sectors. Students develop a vision of their own academic, career, and civic roadmap.
A team of peer mentors facilitate engaging discussions, assist with assignments/projects, provide academic and social support. Many students stay in touch with their peer mentors throughout their college careers and beyond.
Staff and students work to co-create a supportive community space that is inclusive and safe, which transcending such boundaries as ethnicity, socioeconomic class, gender, religion, sexuality.
