Once again we are delighted to extend our invitation to players of either sex aged over 60 years to compete for the trophies named after Peter Kershaw and Mike Thomas. The one qualification for entry is that you must be 60 or over on 29th May 2026.

The Kershaw Cup singles will be contested by the eight entrants with the lowest singles handicaps and will be played level. It is proposed that two groups of 4 players will play first to 8 game sets in a round robin format, with the top 2 players in each group getting through to the semi finals. The semi finals will be played as a first to 8 game set, with the final 1 first to 10 game set.

If there are more than 8 entrants for the Kershaw Cup, qualification matches will be organised to determine the participants in the main competition. Potential participants in any qualifying matches will be informed well in advance of the draw taking place to ensure that there are no scheduling conflicts.

The Thomas Trophy doubles will be played on handicap (maximum of 60) with initial pools so arranged that pairs of similar handicaps are placed in the same pool where possible. This should guarantee every entrant at least three matches over the course of the weekend. If you do not have a partner we will endeavour to find one for you. NB. doubles handicaps will be used. Players are required to have played 3 doubles matches in the last 12 months with the results entered on the T&RA handicap system.

For the weekend to be truly successful, it will need as many people as possible to be available from Friday morning.

The entry fee will be £100 and will cover all court use and marker’s fees. The Saturday evening dinner is open to all players at a cost of £50 (table wine included) at which partners and guests will be more than welcome. This also includes soup and sandwiches on Saturday and Sunday lunchtime. Dress code for the dinner will be jacket and tie. Lunch will be available on all three days.

If anyone is looking for hotel accommodation, please contact the club manager, Stella, for guidance. There are some good budget hotels within walking distance of the club and a special discounted rate has been negotiated with City Suites just 5 minutes walk from the Club (ask Stella).

All the best – we hope to see you in Manchester.

Please complete the entry form below and send or email it to the Club on professional@mtrc.co.uk by 22nd May 2026
