  • Information About TRIO UB & TRIO UBMS

  • What are TRIO Upward Bound and TRIO Upward Bound Math-Science?

    Upward Bound (UB) and Upward Bound Math-Science (UBMS) are college readiness programs designed to assist high school students to develop the skills and motivation necessary to successfully pursue and complete a college education. UBMS specifically helps students recognize and develop their potential to excel in math and science in secondary and postsecondary education. Students are welcome to apply for both programs, but will only be admitted to one.  

    Who may apply?

    Students may apply if they are in 8th, 9th, or 10th grade and attend one of our target schools (Abingdon-Avon, Galesburg, Knoxville, ROWVA).

    Applicants must be:

    • A U.S. citizen or permanent resident of the United States;
    • A first-generation college student (parents/guardians have not earned a four-year college degree); AND/OR
    • Is considered income-eligible based on family’s taxable income for 2020.  

    Students may also be eligible for UB if they have a high risk for academic failure.

    What benefits do students receive from participating in UB/UBMS?

    Both programs offer academic services of tutoring, workshops, and college academic advising designed to enhance student academic skills and achievement.

    UB/UBMS also offer weekly, grade-specific academic sessions including:

    • College visits
    • Help with college and scholarship applications and essays
    • Financial aid and FAFSA assistance
    • SAT prep and test waivers
    • Study skills
    • Career and college exploration

    UB/UBMS offer a Summer Enrichment Program for all of our students.

    • Rising Sophomores and Juniors participate in a 6 week on-campus program focusing on English, math, science, foreign language, and weekly college visits.
    • Rising Seniors have the opportunity to complete a paid summer internship in a career field of their choice.
    • Graduating Seniors are given the opportunity to complete up to two college courses for credit. (Summer Bridge)
    • All summer participants have the opportunity to attend a week long Summer Trip at the conclusion of the summer program.

    All Upward Bound and Upward Bound Math-Science events, workshops, and trips are FREE for program participants!

  • Add up the total number of individuals in your household. The number should include yourself, parents, and siblings who are under the age of 24 if the parents provide more than half of their support. Also include other people if they now live with your parents and the parents provide more than half of their support. If your parents are divorced, include information for only the parent with whom you live (custodial parent) and step-parent if applicable.

  • The Carl Sandburg College Upward Bound and Upward Bound Math-Science programs are 100% funded by the US Department of Education to raise college entrance and graduation rates in Knox County. This is a year-round educational experience. UB/UBMS students are required to attend scheduled workshops, participate in program travel, attend after-school tutoring and participate in the six-week summer program held on the Carl Sandburg College campus.

    My signature below indicates, to the best of my knowledge, the information provided on the UB/UBMS application is true, complete and accurate. I hereby authorize the Carl Sandburg College staff to obtain copies of my child’s academic and financial assistance records from the educational institution he or she is now attending and from educational institutions attended in the future.

  • Goal Setting

  • Goal setting can be challenging, but it is a very important skill. Please think of three goals that you would like to achieve for this upcoming year. These goals can focus on academic growth or personal development. Under each goal, please include a plan of action describing steps that you can take to achieve the goal.

  • Personal Statement Instructions

  • You must complete a personal statement as part of your application. This statement is your opportunity to explain how TRIO Upward Bound and/or TRIO Upward Bound Math-Science will help you and how you can contribute to the program. This statement is also an opportunity for UB/UBMS to get to know you on a more personal level. Your personal statement will be evaluated for content, organization, creativity, and attention to detail.

    Consider the following questions as you write:

    • Why are you interested in Upward Bound and/or Upward Bound Math-Science, and what makes you a good fit?
    • What obstacles may prevent you from getting into college? How can you overcome it?
    • What are some of your academic weaknesses?
    • What are you doing to strengthen your skills in these areas?
    • How would you balance our program with other activities you may be involved in such as sports, work, church and family?     
    • Who inspires you to achieve your personal and academic goals?

  • Teacher Recommendation

  • Please enter the name, school, and class of the teacher you would like to submit a recomendation for you, and we will send our recomendation form to that teacher. It would also be helpful if you can provide the teacher's email (if you have that information).

    *Your Teacher Recommendation must be from an English, Math, or Science class you have taken with the teacher.

  • Congratulations on completing your application for our TRIO Upward Bound and Upward Bound Math-Science programs! When you have completed all the required fields, click on the "submit" button below.

    Once we have received your application, a representative from UB/UBMS will contact you about getting an interview scheduled. This interview is part of the application process and must be completed with student and parent/guardian present. All interviews will take place virtually through zoom unless an alternative arrangement must be made.
