    Title IV-E Stipend Application

  • Eligibility Notice

    To apply for the New Mexico CYFD Title IV-E program, students must meet certain eligibility criteria:

    • Live in New Mexico
    • Be accepted to the WNMU MSW or BSW program
    • Be a BSW junior or senior in good academic standing or an MSW student in good academic standing
    • Agree to take coursework in Child Welfare (SWK 470 or SWK 570)
    • Agree to complete at least one internship at CYFD
    • Be willing to submit to a background check
    • Maintain a GPA of at least 2.0

    Upon graduation, students who receive a Title IV-E Stipend must agree to the following terms:

    • Accept a position offered by CYFD upon graduation and complete a work obligation equal to 9 months for each semester a stipend is received (maximum obligation 36 months)
    • Be willing to relocate within New Mexico to accept a position following graduation
    • Agree to employment conditions set by CYFD
    • Agree to become licensed within 6 months of graduation
    • Submit to a background check
    • Own a personal vehicle by the date of hire

    Notice: Students who fail to meet the terms set forth above will be required to repay any disbursed amounts.

    Please note that applicants to the Title IV-E Traineeship Program are considered job applicants by the Children, Youth, and Families Department.  In addition to meeting the requirements of the WNMU School of Social Work, the Children, Youth, and Families Department has the authority to accept or deny applicants on this basis in compliance with Department policies.

    Please complete the application and attach a recent resume and two letters of reference with name and phone numbers.  Please fill out completely and as accurately as possible.  For exceptions and unusual situations, attach an explanatory note.

    If approved for a stipend, the stipend may affect your financial aid.  Please see your financial aid advisor.

  • You are required to enroll in a Child Welfare course designed for this traineeship (SWK 470 or SWK 570). The course must be taken for credit, and you are required to receive a passing grade.

    Please answer the following questions in outline form and attach. Be prepared to discuss further in the interview as well.

    1. What volunteer or paid experience do you have that can be utilized in a Child Protective Services setting? If applicable, give agency names and length of time (dates of employment) spent at each.
    2. What activities are you engaged in beyond your academic program that relate to the field of child welfare and permanency planning?
    3. Why do you wish to pursue a career in the field of permanency planning? What contribution do you feel you can make to their field?
    4. Is there anything that you feel we should be aware of or that you feel needs further explanation?
