Here is a brief description of each desk:

Video: Produces videos to either accompany online stories or serve as standalone projects. The type of videos produced depend on the newsroom's content at any given time.

*Editorial Board members and columnists are hired at the beginning of each semester in a separate application process. You can find that application here.

  • Work samples are required to assess an applicant's skill level prior to joining the staff.

Applicants for reporting positions should submit writing samples. This can be previously published work from a previous news organization, a piece of creative writing, an article written for a journalism class, etc.

Applicants for positions on the Photo, Video, Audio or Design desks can provide work samples in the appropriate medium either by linking to an online portfolio (Instagram or other social media accounts are acceptable) or by submitting three work samples. These samples can be anything from an interactive graphic you made to a photo taken on your phone. If submitting individual work samples, please combine them into one document.

Copy & Online desk applicants should edit the sample article found here for grammar, spelling and clarity, as well as write a headline and social media post for the article. Please make a copy of the Google Doc, make your changes and upload your edited version below.

NOTE: Staffers whose top three choices include reporting and non-reporting positions should include a work sample applicable to the top-choice desk. Submitting multiple kinds of work samples is optional.

There are three options for submitting work samples: Upload the work below; provide a link to an online portfolio; or bring hard copies to the DTH office at 109 E. Franklin St. If you bring your work sample to the office, print a copy of this form in addition to submitting the form and attach it to the work sample.
