Safety Director
- Share status reports to the Safety Stewards and their managers each Monday so they can have an opportunity to correct any deficiencies for the upcoming Thursday scorecard distribution.
- Mentor and communicate with the Safety Stewards as required for them to understand what is expected in regard to performance, roles, and responsibilities of their position.
Managers and Supervisors
- Assign project Safety Stewards for their respective project(s).
- Allow the Safety Stewards the needed time to complete the requirements of the safety steward role.
Safety Stewards
Safety Orientation and Annual Safety Training
- The Safety Steward is responsible for ensuring that each worker on their respective project has completed the required Safety Orientation training prior to that worker starting work on the project. This requirement includes employees and subcontractors.
Job Hazard Analysis (JHA)
- The Safety Steward is responsible for ensuring that a Job Hazard Assessment is completed during the morning pre-job safety meeting each day before work starts. The required JHA format is located at the online safety support center in the Forms tab. A paper JHA may be substituted for the electronic version under the following condition: A substitute paper JHA must at a minimum contain all the subject matter that is present on the electronic IWS JHA form. The JHA form can be found at the online safety support center in the Forms tab.
Toolbox Talks
- The Safety Steward must ensure a toolbox talk is reviewed by each project once a week. On Sunday afternoon, the Safety Director will distribute a toolbox talk that the crews must review on Monday (or the fist work day of the week) morning at the pre-job safety meeting. The toolbox talk must be documented on the Toolbox Talk Training Registration form located in the safety support center in the Training tab: https://iws.support/toolbox-talks.
Good Catch
- Each project is required to submit at least one good catch for every four weeks of active field operations. The good catch must be submitted using the Good Catch Report form located in the Forms tab of the safety support center. The worker who performs the good catch is required to submit the good catch and the safety steward is required to look for opportunities that qualify for a good catch submission.
Pre-Operations Equipment inspections
- Motorized and mechanical equipment inspections must be completed prior to use each day they are in put into operations. Inspections must be documented on the Pre-Operation Equipment inpspection form located at the safety support center in the Forms tab. The operator of the equipment is the party responsible for completing the inspection and the safety steward is required to ensure the inspections are completed.
Trenching Inspection Form
- The project designated trenching competent person must inspect any open trench(s) over four (4) feet in debth at the beginning of each shift/day. The safety steward is required to ensure this task is completed. This verification can be completed by simply asking the competent person if the inspection was completed.
