  • GOTHIC FRAKTUR RETREAT
    The Practice, Skill-Building
    & Variations

    MARCH 6 - 10, 2024 (Wednesday - Sunday)

Inspired by the work of late German calligraphers Hans Schreiber and Hanns Thaddeus Hoyer, Viktor has developed his own approach to building up double-stroked letters, with an individual, one-stroke-at-a-time technique (verses using a scroll pen).

The intention of this technique requires control and identifying the details of each letter, where to start and end each stroke and conscientious spacing.

This retreat begins with an introduction to classic Fraktur calligraphy.
Viktor's personal version of this Gothic hand is inspired by the work of Hermann Zapf and Claude Mediavilla, in addition to the influences and teachings of contemporary master, John Stevens.

The retreat environment offers plenty of enriching time to study, practice and become familiar and comfortable with the Fraktur hand. Viktor will help students of any ability level build their confidence as they explore his approach in making double-stroked letterforms and apply exercises, to reinforce and strengthen their progress.

Through a series of demonstrations throughout the retreat, Viktor will work with different tools which expand the character of strokes in this script.

Participants have the option of lettering on fabric, in addition to a special session on Embossing  - Lettering with Subtle Elegance.

Students will be encouraged to create final pieces using their choice of the skills and methods learned during the week.
