Introduction to the Ruling Pen

Are you ready to take your lettering skills to the next level?

The Ruling Pen is a versatile tool that can help you achieve a wide range of strokes, splatters, and rough edges in your calligraphic compositions.

This one-day workshop will start with basic exercises to help you understand the manipulation and possibilities of this unique tool.

Viktor will then progress towards the Italic hand Cancelleresca and gradually move towards more expressive strokes, dynamic compositions, and gestural marks.

You will also learn about how the role of paper plays in producing high-quality strokes.

Viktor will guide you through the entire process and provide you with personalized feedback to help you improve your skills. Don't miss out on this opportunity to rule the calligraphy world with our Ruling Pen workshop!

REQUIRED SUPPLIES

• Ruling Pen or Cola Pen - If you have a variety, please bring them
• Walnut ink or Sumi ink
• Watercolors or gouache
• Dr. Ph Martins Bleedproof White
• Drawing paper or Kraft paper for practice
• Watercolor paper for final pieces (2 full sheets 140# - Canson, Fabriano, Arches or Strathmore are good options)
• Container for water
• Dishes for inks and a few mixing brushes (old brushes)
• Apron (Ruling Pen spatters)

In-Person Attendees:

• Seat Cushion
• Snack to share

Note: There are many ruling pens on the market - you only need to bring one, but if you already have several types, bring them.

CANCELLATION POLICY
A $25 cancellation fee applies if you cancel at least 10 days in advance.
Cancellation requests must be emailed directly to workshops@txlac.org. There are no refunds, for any reason, less than 10 days prior, during, or after the class.
The workshop will be recorded if you are unable to attend in person.

In the unlikely event Texas Lettering Arts Council or the instructor cancels the class, you will receive a full refund of tuition only.
