Case Response:
EckhartLandia is one of the world’s largest cities, home to over 20 million people. Although EckhartLandia frequently experiences large stretches of significant rainfall, one in five residents don’t have access to enough drinking water. With EckhartLandia’s growing population, the water supply becomes increasingly strained each day.
Currently, EckhartLandia primarily relies on aquifers and water imported from remote sources. The aquifers are underground reserves of water extracted by pumping systems. Unfortunately, ~40% of water pumped is lost through pipes, reserves are susceptible to contamination, and water sources are expected to deplete by 2030. The water imported from remote sources are no better. It tends to be more expensive due to shipping costs and varies in taste quality.
EckhartLandia’s Principal of Water Supply (PoWS) has enlisted you to determine the best course of action. They are contemplating investing in wastewater treatment, rainwater collection, pipe replacement, or outsourcing altogether. Assume that the PoWS can only select one option. Utimately, PoWS is interested in pursuing a cost effective and sustainable option that maximizes water access.
