Petition to Form Pratt Lake Level Board Pratt Lake, Gladwin, MI
To: The Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE)
Michigan Department of Natural Resources
The Gladwin County Board of Commissioners
The Gladwin Count Drain Commissioner
The Pratt Lake Property Owners Association (PLPOA)
Your petitioners, the undersigned property owners of land abutting Pratt Lake, Sage Township, Gladwin County Michigan, respectfully submit onto this Board as follows:
The Issue:
In recent years, the water level at Pratt Lake has experienced noticeable declines, causing environmental, economic, and recreational concerns. This drop in water level is not just an act of God but was caused by an elected official(s). The water inlet was removed and a high-water level drain was installed. Unfortunately, for the entire community, the "solution" did not address lake level sustainability.
Reduced water levels:
- Threaten aquatic ecosystems by altering habitats and reducing biodiversity.
- Impact recreational activities such as fishing, boating, and swimming, which are essential to the local economy and quality of life.
- Decrease property values for lakeside residents, affecting both their investments and tax contributions to the county.
- Increase the risk of algae blooms and water quality issues due to stagnant, warmer water.
Our Request:
We, therefore, do hereby petition your Board to take the following actions as provided by Part 309, Inland Lake Improvements, of the Natural Resources and Environmental Protection Act, 1994 PA 451, as amended
A special assessment district will be established and special assessments may be levied to finance the desired lake improvements
Water Level Assessment and Monitoring: Implement regular and transparent assessments of the lake’s water levels and publish the findings.
Sustainable Water Management: Collaborate with local experts, environmental organizations, and the PLPOA to explore solutions such as water inflow management, and potential dredging or shoreline restoration. Our request is NOT to eliminate the current high-water discharge on the northeast corner.
Community Involvement: Establish regular public forums to involve property owners and stakeholders in decision-making processes. Reestablishment of the Lake Level Board for Pratt Lake.
Why This Matters:
Pratt Lake is more than a body of water—it is a cherished part of the community’s identity, supporting wildlife, recreation, and the local economy. Protecting its water levels is essential for preserving its beauty and sustainability for future generations.
We, the undersigned, stand united in our commitment to safeguarding Pratt Lake and call upon the authorities to take immediate and meaningful action.
