Each of us is called to serve, for service is a reflection of our love for God. As Christ instructed his disciples, “If I then, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another’s feet” John 13:14.
God calls on us to use our time, talents, and treasures to serve the needs of our brothers and sisters. Our Lord teaches us that the greatest kind of giving is from one’s need. The one who gives from scarcity, whether it be time, money, or energy, demonstrates that his giving is filled with much love, sacrifice, and a spirit of putting others before himself. “Truly I tell you,” He said, “this poor widow has put in more than all the others. All these people gave their gifts out of their wealth; but she out of her poverty put in all she had to live on” Luke 21:3-4.
As the body of Christ, together we are serving Christ by ministering to the needs of our brothers and sisters. “Inasmuch as you did it to one of the least of these My brethren, you did it to Me” Matthew 25:40.
