    After School Media-Making Enrichment for San Francisco Youth
  • Don’t Just Consume Media—Create It!

    Do you have a passion for storytelling? Want to bring your ideas to life through video and animation? Join us at Next Gen, where you’ll learn to make your own media using professional-grade equipment and software—all in a supportive, hands-on environment.

    Who Can Apply?
    Next Gen is open to San Francisco youth ages 14-17. No experience required—just bring your creativity and enthusiasm!

    What You’ll Learn:
    Led by experienced teaching artists, Next Gen provides a solid foundation in multiple media-making disciplines. Whether you choose video production or animation, you’ll develop practical skills through hands-on projects. Our curriculum includes:

    • Twice-weekly classes: Tuesdays and Thursdays, 4:30–6:30 pm
    • Career development workshops and industry insights
    • Collaborative work on real-world projects
    • Capstone projects to showcase your skills at the end of each semester
    • A collective screening/premiere and community celebration

    Program Incentives:
    Complete all program requirements, including good attendance and capstone projects, and receive a $300 incentive!

    Classes begin on Tuesday, January 20th for all new students, and we are accepting applications on a rolling basis through January 13. Seats are limited, so apply early! All applications will be reviewed by our instructing team, and you’ll hear back within two weeks.

     

    Next Gen Winter/Spring Semester: Deep Dive into Your Chosen Track

    Next Gen is proud to offer our award-winning media making foundation programs, Factory (Video Production Foundations) and Animation. Each unit is a semester long, and all students will have the opportunity for hands-on media making experiences. Our Factory and Animation units take place at KQED in the Mission.

     

    A note about this course’s length:

    Next Gen is a semester-long program. Students do have the option to do the program again and sign up for a different track the second time around, if they are interested. 

    Spring Semester: January 20th – April 30th, 2026

    Our celebration and film showcase will be the last day of class Thursday, April 30th from 5-7pm at KQED in the Mission.

  • More about the tracks:

    Factory (Video Production Foundations): Students will learn industry-standard technical knowledge about video and filmmaking pre-production, production, and post-production. Through storytelling techniques using DSLR cameras, creative cinematography techniques, and more advanced post-production, filmmakers will create a range of short projects through hands-on exercises and instruction. Filmmakers are encouraged to explore topics important to them and their communities while also making videos that touch on issues of social justice.


    Animation: Participants with an interest in visual art and animation will learn foundational techniques for studying and creating motion. Students will have the opportunity to explore the basics of animation techniques, such as traditional frame animation to experimental styles and stop-motion. No animation experience required!
