Humans have followed quiet inner voices for centuries. Sometimes those voices lead to paintings…sometimes to revolutions. Joan believed she was being guided toward something larger than herself, and that belief gave others the courage to follow. Paris has always been a city where conviction takes many forms.

In a way…they do. They remind us that sacred places must sometimes look fierce to stay protected. But their real job is actually quite practical. They channel rainwater away from the cathedral walls so storms do not erode the stone. Which means...these frightening creatures are actually protectors. Just like someone else in our story.

Yes, gargoyles act as water spouts, carrying rainwater away from the cathedral so storms cannot damage the stone. The word gargoyle comes from the French word gargouille, meaning throat. They gargle rainwater. Rather glamorous plumbing, don’t you think? But what matters most is this: These creatures look frightening…yet their true purpose is protection. Which brings us to someone the people of Paris misunderstood completely.

Humans do tend to notice appearances first. Cats do as well, although personally I judge people based on whether they carry pastries. But sometimes the most important parts of someone are not visible at all.

Kindness is not always the easiest thing to notice at first, but it is usually the most important. Cats, of course, measure kindness by how generously someone shares their butter.

Paris runs on many things, stories, courage, and occasionally pastries. But once, something as simple as bread helped ignite a revolution. So tell me, what happens when a city grows hungry while its rulers are comfortable?

Humans do try patience from time to time…though I’ve noticed it rarely lasts longer than a warm croissant on a windowsill. Come, there’s a place nearby where Paris remembers exactly what happens when waiting finally runs out.

When enough people grow hungry, even the quietest streets of Paris can begin to roar, a bit like a hungry cat. Let us continue. There’s a place nearby where the consequences of that roar still echo.

Sadly for Parisian pastry chefs, alchemy requires a bit more than flour and enthusiasm. The legend I’m thinking of belongs to someone far quieter…and far more mysterious.

The legend of Nicolas Flamel has fascinated Parisians for centuries. A humble scholar who was said to have discovered the secret of the Philosopher’s Stone, a substance rumored to transform metal into gold and unlock the mysteries of life itself. Whether the legend is true…well…Paris does enjoy its secrets.

Paris does keep a rather magnificent house for music. A place where chandeliers sparkle, voices soar, and entire stories are sung instead of spoken. Humans call it the Opera. Though some say the building holds a few secrets of its own…

Montmartre has inspired many musicians and painters over the years. But when Parisians truly want drama…they gather somewhere far grander than a studio.

Cats, on the other paw, are far more sophisticated. We judge people by whether they scratch behind our ears and share their pastries. Poor Erik believed the world would only notice the mask he wore…not the music inside him. So he chose the shadows instead of the stage.

Sometimes people hide because they are afraid of being misunderstood. Cats understand this perfectly. For example, when I stare silently into the distance for long periods of time, humans assume I am mysterious. In reality, I am usually thinking about butter

A beautiful voice, a brilliant invention, a work of art that makes the world stop and stare. Erik certainly possessed extraordinary talent. His music could fill an entire opera house with wonder. But admiration can be a curious thing. It often shines brightly…yet disappears just as quickly. Even the most celebrated performers eventually leave the stage. Which leaves a rather important question behind…what remains when the applause fades?

Erik had remarkable talent, yet what he longed for most was something much simpler, to be understood. Perhaps that is why stories like his continue to echo through these halls. They remind us that behind every performance, every mask, every carefully practiced role…there is still a person hoping to be seen.

Paris has many wonderful pastries, but I must admit, that one is particularly impressive. The soul of Paris is not only found in sweet things. Sometimes it is revealed in the quiet moments when a city must decide what it truly believes. Our next story takes place over sixteen centuries ago...

Charging into battle certainly requires courage. Paris has known its share of brave warriors. Although, if you ask a sensible cat, charging directly toward danger is rarely the preferred strategy. I personally recommend high rooftops and a comfortable escape route. But courage does not only appear on battlefields. Sometimes it appears in the imagination…when someone decides to build something the world has never seen before.

Remaining calm while everyone else panics can steady an entire city. That is the kind of courage Geneviève gave to Paris. Cats understand this sort of thing very well. When chaos appears, the wisest response is usually to sit quietly and observe…preferably somewhere comfortable. But Paris also has another kind of courage, the courage to imagine something extraordinary.
