The INSIGHT Program
Initiative for Student Immersion in Research, Clinical Care and Training in Optometry
The SUNY College of Optometry Summer Research Opportunity Program is a six-week experience focused on introducing undergraduate students to the profession of optometry and vision science research. The program incorporates hands-on laboratory research and clinical exposure to provide a comprehensive understanding of academic and clinical optometry.
Participants will work in a lab while engaging in structured programming that highlights career pathways, patient care, and basic research.
Objectives:
- Introduce undergraduate students to vision science and optometry
- Foster interest in optometry as a career pathway
- Provide mentorship and hands-on laboratory experience
- Strengthen the pathway for future applicants to SUNY College of Optometry
Tentative Program Structure:
- Week 1-2: Orientation, Eye CARE Camp and lab placement
- Week 3-4: Research training, active participation in research projects
- Weeks 5: Progress on research projects, clinical shadowing
- Week 6: Completion of research project and presentation at the final symposium
Program completion requirements:
- Research poster or oral presentation
- 1–2-page reflection on research and clinical exposure
- Participation in all program components
Program benefits:
- Mentorship from faculty mentors and peer to peer guidance
- $5,000 grant to support housing, travel and living expenses
Student eligibility:
- U.S. citizens and permanent residents over the age of 18
- Undergraduate students in an accredited four-year college of university in the U.S., Puerto Rico or other U.S. territory
- A minimum of one year of undergraduate coursework must be completed. Priority will be given to Sophomores (four quarters or three semesters of college experience) or juniors who will be returning in the fall to continue undergraduate studies
- Cumulative GPA 3.0 or above
- Must also register for the summer Eye-CARE camp (separate registration form)
