4/15/26 Eastern Hemlock Restoration Hike and Planting Activity

Wednesday, April 15th, 2026. 10am-1pm.
Join us for an educational hike through the Hellen Creek Nature and Wildlife Preserve located 4 miles from downtown Lusby, MD. Attendees will learn about the struggle to save the native Eastern Hemlock tree from disappearing from the Calvert County landscape. The Hellen Creek Nature and Wildlife Preserve has the last remaining Eastern Hemlock stand on the east Coast’s southernmost coastal plain. Learn about the ecological benefits that Eastern Hemlocks provide while learning about what CPNHT is doing to preserve, protect and regenerate this rare native tree stand in Calvert County.

A secondary activity will include a planting activity of small (8-10 inch) Eastern Hemlock seedlings.

As of now, you can sign up only one person at a time using this form.

If you are bringing guests to the hike, please send them this form to complete. Minors will need to complete the form with a parent or guardian.

Hike Details

Date: Wednesday, April 15th, 2026

Time: 10am-1pm

Hike Leader: Bruce Fall, Director, Cove Point Natural Heritage Trust

Location: Meet at 11785 Clifton Dr. Lusby, MD 20657

Route: Intermediate ~1.5 mile hike through forests and watershed. Some clear cut trails, some primitive trails through trees and brush. Uneven surfaces, up/downhill climbs.

Please Wear/Bring: Long pants and long sleeves, sturdy footwear for hiking, water, insect repellent

Note: Cove Point Natural Heritage Trust will cancel or postpone the hike in the case of inclement weather. We will contact you if the hike is cancelled or postponed.

- Participation may include hiking, trail maintenance, nature education, light cleanup, or similar activities on conservation lands managed by the Cove Point Natural Heritage Trust (CPNHT). These areas may include uneven ground, fallen branches, insects, wildlife, and other natural hazards.

- I understand that participation in activities on CPNHT properties involves inherent risks, including but not limited to tripping, slipping, falling, insect bites, allergic reactions, contact with plants or wildlife, and exposure to changing weather conditions.
